Free Rental of 31 Rehabilitation Aids Including Wheelchairs and Crutches
Gangseo-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Jin Kyohun) is operating a "Mobile Rehabilitation Aid Sharing and Distribution Service" to improve convenience for residents.
This service delivers rehabilitation aids such as wheelchairs and crutches directly to residents who need them due to sudden accidents or temporary disabilities. In particular, it adopts a mobile delivery approach to increase accessibility for single-person households without caregivers and for residents with limited mobility who may have difficulty receiving assistance.
The available rehabilitation aids for rental include a total of 31 items, such as manual wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, spinal braces, canes, and leg supports. To ensure hygiene and user safety, the district regularly disinfects the rental items and conducts ongoing operational checks. Any resident living in Gangseo-gu can apply, and the standard rental period is one month, with the possibility of a one-month extension if needed.
Applications can be made by phone, after which the requested items are delivered and collected at the desired location. For those who wish to visit in person, rentals are available at the Gangseo-gu Federation of Disabled Persons Organizations (247 Gonghang-daero) upon verification of ID such as a resident registration card.
This service was first launched in 2021, making Gangseo-gu the first local government in the country to implement such a program. Since then, it has provided significant support for many residents in their rehabilitation and return to daily life.
Jin Kyohun, the district mayor, stated, "I hope this service will provide practical help to residents facing difficulties due to sudden accidents or temporary disabilities," adding, "We will continue to expand field-oriented, customized welfare services to build a warmer Gangseo without any blind spots in welfare coverage."
