Kim Moonsoo: "Allowing Virtual Asset Investments by Government Agencies and Financial Companies"

Establishment of Secretary for Virtual Assets in the Presidential Office
Pledge to Create a Digital Asset Committee under the Prime Minister's Office

Kim Moonsoo, a presidential hopeful from the People Power Party and former Minister of Employment and Labor, pledged on the 27th to allow government agencies such as the National Pension Service and Korea Investment Corporation to invest in virtual assets.

On this day, at his presidential campaign office in Daehwa Building, Yeouido, Seoul, Kim stated, "Given the changes in the domestic and global economic environment, the existence of virtual assets can no longer be denied," and announced, "I will foster a sound virtual asset industry to revitalize the economy."

In addition to allowing government agencies to invest in virtual assets, he also proposed permitting the trading of virtual asset exchange-traded fund (ETF) products and abolishing restrictions on direct investment in virtual assets by financial companies.

He further pledged to establish a Secretary for Virtual Assets within the Presidential Office to protect virtual asset investors, and to create a Digital Asset Committee under the Prime Minister's Office to nurture and supervise digital assets.

Kim pointed out, "About 16 million people, or one third of the population, are participating in the virtual asset market, but investors in virtual assets in Korea's financial markets are left without even the minimum safeguards."

He went on to promise, "We will implement policies to protect individual investors from harm caused by crime and information asymmetry, and to create a sound market environment."

Meanwhile, prior to the announcement of the pledge, former lawmaker Kim Eunhee declared her support for Kim Moonsoo, stating, "It is difficult to achieve real change without knowing the real situation. Since he was known for people-centered administration during his tenure as Governor of Gyeonggi Province, I believe he will best understand the problems on the ground."
