World Tour Focused on Eco-Friendliness
LED Wristband Collection Event... Korea Achieves 99% Retrieval Rate
The world-renowned British rock band Coldplay concluded their ten-day concert tour in Korea on April 25.
Notably, this tour in Korea drew attention for achieving a world record in the retrieval rate of the 'Gyro Band,' an LED wristband made from eco-friendly materials.
From April 16 to April 25, Coldplay held the "Live Nation Presents Coldplay: Music of the Spheres Delivered by DHL" at Goyang Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province.
This world tour was planned and executed with a strong focus on environmental sustainability. To reduce carbon emissions, the audience was restricted from bringing single-use water bottles, and part of the venue's electricity was supplied by renewable energy generated onsite, such as solar power and kinetic flooring.
Additionally, the band reduced travel distances by optimizing the tour route, increased the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for air travel, and utilized low-carbon transportation such as electric trucks and biodiesel vehicles for ground transport.
In particular, instead of traditional light sticks, the audience was given remote-controlled LED wristbands called 'Gyro Bands,' made from eco-friendly materials, which were collected at the end of the concert. The Gyro Bands are made from 100% compostable plant-based materials.
The organizers displayed the wristband retrieval rates from cities visited during the world tour on the venue's screen, encouraging a friendly competition among audiences.
Prior to the Korea concerts, the cities with the highest retrieval rates were Tokyo, Japan (97%) and Helsinki, Finland (97%). They were followed by Copenhagen, Denmark (96%), Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Gothenburg, Sweden (94%). On the first day of the Korea concert on April 16, Goyang's retrieval rate was recorded at 96%.
This sparked a movement among Korean concertgoers to surpass Tokyo, which held the top spot. As a result, the retrieval rate rose to 98% during the April 18 concert, and reached 99% at the April 24 concert, making Goyang the city with the highest retrieval rate in Coldplay's world tour history.
During this process, controversy arose when some Chinese individuals encouraged Chinese attendees of the Korea concerts not to return their wristbands. A Chinese influencer posted on social media urging those attending the concerts in Korea not to return the wristbands, but later deleted the post after facing criticism.
