The Chungnam Institute of History and Culture will launch the 'Chungnam Marine Culture Forum' in Dangjin this year to shed light on marine cultural heritage.
The Institute announced that the first 'Chungnam Marine Culture Forum' of the year, themed "Reclamation and Seawalls of Dangjin," will take place on April 26 at 2:00 p.m. in the conference room on the second floor of the Sinpyeong Administrative Welfare Center in Dangjin.
This forum will feature lectures as well as a field visit to the Sapgyoho Seawall. The event aims to revisit the geographical, ecological, and socio-cultural impacts of reclamation projects on the local community, and to reflect on the significance of reclamation and seawalls as marine cultural heritage.
The 'Chungnam Marine Culture Forum' was launched in 2021 and is composed of about 70 participants, including officials from the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture, the National Ecological and Marine Relics Exhibition Hall, related organizations, local experts, and citizens. The forum is held in a monthly format, touring cities and counties in Chungnam from April to November each year.
This year's forum will be held in six sessions, each with a different theme: ▲Reclamation and Seawalls of Dangjin in April ▲Haenyeo of Boryeong in May ▲Gyeolseong Eupseong Fortress of Hongseong in June ▲Mokjangseong of Seosan in August ▲Sogeunjinseong Fortress of Taean in September ▲Yellow Corvina Fishing and Seaweed Farming of Seocheon in October.
In July, a field trip to Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo in Taean County is planned, and in November, a local exploration program to Jeolla Usuyeong in Haenam, Jeollanam-do will be organized.
Kim Nakjung, Director of the Institute, stated, "The Institute is holding the forum in cooperation with experts and local researchers to discover and shed new light on Chungnam's marine history and cultural heritage. However, more interest and participation are needed to find practical ways to preserve and utilize marine cultural heritage," urging for greater attention.
