YouTube, the world's largest video platform, has selected Psy's "Gangnam Style" and the children's song "Baby Shark" among the key moments that marked milestones in its 20-year history.
On April 23, The New York Times (NYT) reported on 18 of YouTube's "biggest moments" in celebration of the platform's 20th anniversary.
NYT introduced, "Psy is a South Korean singer and rapper who released the music video for his song 'Gangnam Style' in July 2012. By the end of that year, the video became the first on the internet to surpass one billion views."
Regarding "Baby Shark," NYT wrote, "Its world domination began quietly," explaining, "In November 2015, Seoul-based children's content creator SmartStudy uploaded the song's video to YouTube under the Pinkfong brand."
Other important moments included "Me at the zoo," the very first video uploaded to YouTube exactly 20 years ago by co-founder Jawed Karim; the rise of Canadian singer Justin Bieber, the first global star discovered through YouTube videos; and American comedian and talk show host Conan O'Brien's appearance on YouTube doing a "mukbang" broadcast.
NYT also included MrBeast's "Squid Game" among the 18 key moments. This video, which has more than 200 million followers, is based on the original Korean Netflix drama "Squid Game," written and directed by Hwang Donghyuk, and features a real-life survival game with cash prizes.
