Intensive Inspection of Restrooms in 85 Public Facilities
Citizen Monitoring Group to Inspect Privately Accessible Restrooms
Campaign to Eradicate Illegal Filming Also Underway
Dongdaemun District (District Mayor Lee Pilhyeong) announced on April 23 that it will conduct a "special inspection of illegal recording devices" in public restrooms throughout the district to fundamentally block illegal filming crimes.
The special inspection will be carried out from April 22 to April 30, targeting restrooms in a total of 85 public facilities managed by the district, including Dongdaemun District Office, community centers, welfare facilities, and parks.
Park Mihui, Director of Family Policy, explained, "This is a proactive measure to protect the safety of residents, taking into account that outdoor activities are expected to increase during Family Month."
The district also plans to inspect illegal recording devices secretly installed in privately accessible restrooms through the Illegal Filming Citizen Monitoring Group. At the same time, it will conduct campaigns to eradicate illegal filming, aiming to raise public awareness about digital sex crimes.
District Mayor Lee Pilhyeong stated, "When it comes to digital sex crimes such as illegal filming, 'prevention' is the most important factor," and added, "We will continue regular inspections to alleviate residents' anxiety and create an environment where everyone can feel safe."
Meanwhile, the "Illegal Filming Citizen Monitoring Group" is operated by selecting female citizens in each autonomous district who can actively serve as monitoring members, based on the "Seoul Metropolitan Government Ordinance on the Prevention of Illegal Filming in Public Restrooms, etc." The selected citizens begin their activities after receiving training on equipment use and gender equality from security company experts and former or current police officers.
The district has selected and is currently operating four members in the first half of the year, and plans to select two additional members in the second half. Building owners or managers who wish to request an inspection can contact the Family Policy Division.
