Experience “Royal Cuisine Content” During the Danjong Culture Festival Starting on the 25th
Opportunities to Participate in Cooking Competitions, Exhibitions, and Special Lectures
Yeongwol County in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Choi Myungseo) announced on the 23rd that the Yeongwol Culture and Tourism Foundation (CEO Park Sangheon) will host the first “Danjong Gourmet Festival” during the 58th Danjong Culture Festival, which begins on the 25th, with the theme of royal court cuisine from the Joseon Dynasty.
This event has been planned as part of the Cultural City Yeongwol project to promote “urban asset branding.” Urban asset branding is a strategic initiative to discover, reinterpret, and create content from Yeongwol’s key cultural assets with potential, in order to develop a city brand that drives regional growth through culture.
The “Danjong Gourmet Festival” is a new cultural content project that combines the narrative of Danjong, one of Yeongwol’s most prominent historical figures, with traditional gourmet culture, allowing citizens and tourists to experience it together.
This gourmet festival will feature a total of three programs: a royal court cuisine cooking competition, a royal court cuisine exhibition, and a special lecture on Joseon Dynasty royal cuisine.
The royal court cuisine cooking competition, with the theme “creative royal cuisine with a modern twist,” will showcase dishes made using local specialties, offering tourists a new visual and culinary experience.
Anyone can participate, and the competition is divided into two categories: the student division (high school and university students) and the general division (university students or participants not in the student division).
A total of 24 teams will be selected, with a combined prize pool of 14.8 million won. The grand prize winner in the general division will receive 5 million won, while the grand prize winner in the student division will receive 1.5 million won. Notably, this competition, which merges tradition and creativity, is expected to go beyond a simple cooking contest and become a cultural platform where citizens interpret and recreate the city’s assets.
The royal court cuisine exhibition, which highlights the formal beauty and meaning of traditional food, is designed to help visitors gain a broader understanding of the food culture of Danjong and the Joseon Dynasty through historical records and visual experiences. This exhibition also holds potential for traditional culture education and as a tourism resource.
In addition, a special lecture on royal court cuisine will be delivered by Han Bokryeo, a holder of National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 38 for Joseon Dynasty royal cuisine. This will be a valuable opportunity to learn firsthand about the historical philosophy and depth of daily life embedded in traditional food culture, and is an educational program that enhances the professionalism and depth of urban culture.
An official from the Yeongwol Culture and Tourism Foundation stated, “The Danjong Gourmet Festival is a cultural city content that re-discovers Yeongwol’s identity through the symbolic figure of Danjong and the traditional asset of Joseon royal cuisine, allowing citizens to participate in building the city brand. We will continue to expand projects that culturally reconstruct local assets in the future.”
