On the 22nd, Gumi City in Gyeongbuk held the "45th Disability Day Commemoration Ceremony" at the Gumi Disabled Sports Center, reaffirming its commitment to the independence and rights enhancement of disabled persons and the realization of an inclusive society for all.
This event was organized by Oh Gwanghee, president of the Gumi Disabled Organizations Council, and was attended by over 1,000 people, including leaders of disabled organizations, welfare contributors, and citizens. The ceremony was held in a simple manner, omitting pre-ceremony and congratulatory performances in consideration of the large-scale wildfire damage in the northern region of Gyeongbuk.
The ceremony was held under the slogan "Looking at Happiness, Capturing Everyday Life, Continuing Hope," and included the entrance of the flag, commendations for contributors, presentation of plaques of appreciation, and a commemorative performance. The slogan conveyed a community message of independence and hope in the daily lives of disabled persons, as well as the aspiration to build a society where everyone can be happy.
Kim Jangho, Mayor of Gumi, stated, "Breaking down the barriers between people with and without disabilities and guaranteeing equal opportunities is the true beginning of an inclusive city," adding, "We will spare no administrative support and warm consideration so that disabled persons can confidently achieve independence as members of the local community and feel vitality in their lives."
Meanwhile, Disability Day was established as a legal commemorative day in 1981, and every year, based on April 20, ceremonies and various weekly events are held to promote understanding of disabled persons and encourage their will for rehabilitation.
