Mokpo Coast Guard Conducts First Quarter Basic Disaster Preparedness Training with Civilian, Government, and Military Agencies

The Mokpo Coast Guard Station (Chief Chae Sujun) announced that it conducted the "2025 First Quarter Basic Disaster Preparedness Training" at 2:30 p.m. on April 22 in the station's small conference room.

This tabletop exercise was based on a scenario in which a passenger plane departing from Bangkok attempted to land at Muan Airport, collided with a flock of birds, and made an emergency landing in the waters near Bulmugido, resulting in 100 passengers drifting at sea in a complex disaster situation.

The training lasted about one hour, with approximately 25 participants from 17 organizations across civilian, government, and military sectors, including the Jeonnam Western Branch of the Korea Maritime Rescue Association, Muan Airport Corporation, Muan County Office, Mokpo City Hall, Mokpo Fire Station, and the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA), discussing practical response measures.

During the exercise, the Korea Traffic Control Center (ASAC) received a rescue report and relayed it to the Mokpo Coast Guard situation room. The Coast Guard and related agencies then swiftly collaborated to discuss the rescue of those adrift at sea and subsequent transport and response systems.

The participating organizations shared practical response measures, including: sharing rapid communication systems among agencies in the initial stage of an accident; designating assembly points and dividing roles for mass rescues; and utilizing maritime disaster rescue teams efficiently.

A Mokpo Coast Guard official stated, "This tabletop exercise simulating a disaster was an opportunity to further strengthen our cooperation system with related agencies," adding, "We will ensure perfect preparedness to protect the lives of the public through realistic training."
