Over 800 Volunteers and Residents Attend
Award Ceremonies and Singing Contest Lead Efforts to Improve Disability Awareness
Dongdaemun District (Mayor Lee Pilhyung) announced that it successfully held the "45th Dongdaemun District Day of Persons with Disabilities Grand Festival" on April 21 in the auditorium on the second floor of the district office, in celebration of the 45th Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The Day of Persons with Disabilities was established to improve social awareness of people with disabilities and to encourage their rehabilitation efforts. In 1981, after the United Nations declared the "International Year of Disabled Persons," the first Day of Persons with Disabilities event was held on April 20 of that year. Since 1991, South Korea has designated April 20 as a legal commemorative day and has celebrated it annually.
This year's event was organized by the Dongdaemun District chapter of the Seoul Association for the Physically Disabled (President Choi Jungseok). Approximately 800 people, including volunteers, residents, and distinguished guests, attended, making it one of the most vibrant celebrations to date.
During the first part of the event, 13 individuals who contributed to the advancement of welfare and awareness for people with disabilities were awarded certificates of commendation, while 6 others received plaques of appreciation. The second part featured a singing contest for people with disabilities, in which 11 finalists who passed the preliminary round showcased their talents, transforming the venue into a festive atmosphere.
Lee Pilhyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, stated, "The Day of Persons with Disabilities is not just a commemorative day, but a time for our society to reflect on whether we are truly practicing 'equality' and 'solidarity.' Dongdaemun District will continue to make even greater efforts to ensure a 'daily life of equality' where everyone is respected and a 'warm solidarity' where no one is left behind."
Choi Jungseok, President of the chapter, said, "Thanks to the participation and support of so many people, this year's Day of Persons with Disabilities event was even more meaningful. We will continue to work tirelessly to improve the rights and awareness of people with disabilities in the community."
