Kimpo City Demonstrates Strong Commitment to Honoring the Sacrifice and Dedication of War Veterans
Gimpo City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Byungsoo) announced on April 22 that, following the revision of the "Ordinance on Respect and Support for National Veterans in Gimpo City," the eligibility for the spouse allowance for deceased veterans will be expanded starting in April.
This ordinance revision was implemented to honor the sacrifice and dedication of deceased veterans and to support the stable livelihood of their spouses. Previously, the spouse allowance was provided only if the deceased veteran had been receiving the veterans’ honorary allowance. From now on, however, all spouses of deceased veterans will be eligible to receive a monthly allowance of 50,000 won, regardless of whether the veteran was a recipient.
The city estimates that the number of beneficiaries will more than double, increasing from the current 167 to approximately 400 people.
Eligible recipients are spouses of veterans who participated in the Korean War or the Vietnam War, who have registered their address in Gimpo City as of the application date, and who were listed as spouses in the family relations register at the time of the veteran's death.
Applicants should prepare the required documents and submit them in person to the administrative welfare center of their local town, township, or neighborhood. After eligibility is confirmed, the allowance will be paid on the 25th of each month.
The city plans to secure beneficiary data through the Incheon Veterans Affairs Office to ensure that those who have not yet received benefits are informed and can apply. In addition, the city will promote the program through its website, social media, newsletters, and veterans’ organizations in various ways.
Since the beginning of the 8th popularly elected administration, Gimpo City has provided various forms of veterans’ allowances to national merit recipients and their families, increasing the amounts annually to support their economic stability. Notably, this year, the city doubled the monthly honorary allowance for Korean War veterans from 50,000 won to 100,000 won.
Kim Byungsoo, Mayor of Gimpo City, stated, "Remembering the noble dedication of veterans who answered the call of the nation and honoring their families even after their passing is the true meaning of veterans’ affairs. We will continue to actively expand respect and support for national veterans in the future."
