Illegal Waste Discharge Detected During Patrol Activities
The Mokpo Coast Guard Station (headed by Chae Sujun) has detected a vessel illegally discharging waste into the sea.
According to the Mokpo Coast Guard on April 22, a 500-ton barge, referred to as Vessel A, was caught on April 21 at Mokpo South Port Pier for allegedly dumping waste iron powder and waste concrete debris into the sea without authorization.
The Coast Guard reported that Vessel A was apprehended after officers discovered the illegal dumping during routine patrol activities at the port and harbor.
Vessel A is suspected of having dumped approximately 5 kilograms of waste, generated during welding and other repair work on board, into the sea using a shovel. The Coast Guard plans to investigate the case for violations of the Marine Waste and Marine Sediment Pollution Management Act.
An official from the Mokpo Coast Guard stated, "The illegal discharge of waste into the ocean has a direct impact on the ecosystem and can threaten the survival of marine life. We will continue to maintain strict surveillance and enforcement to eradicate such illegal activities."
Meanwhile, those who illegally discharge waste into the ocean in violation of the Marine Waste Management Act (abbreviated title) may face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.
