2024 Community Survey: Highest Satisfaction with Local Living, Life, and Previous Day's Happiness Among Seoul Districts
Top Welfare Scores for Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Childrearing; Lowest Reported Inconvenience with Sidewalk Use
Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Kangsoo) achieved the highest overall satisfaction with local living among the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul, according to the "2024 Community Survey" conducted by Statistics Korea.
The district received a score of 7.58 out of 10, which is significantly higher than the Seoul average of 6.63.
Additionally, Mapo-gu ranked first in Seoul for both "overall life satisfaction in recent times" and "happiness felt the previous day," receiving scores of 7.80 and 7.50, respectively.
Welfare related to pregnancy, childbirth, and childrearing also scored 7.24 points, surpassing the average of 6.20, and was the highest among all districts in Seoul.
Supporting these results, Mapo-gu is accelerating its response to low birth rates through advanced policies such as the "Haetbit Center," which provides integrated management for pregnancy, childbirth, and childrearing; the "Cheokkkeut Center," a strong support system for single mothers; the "Mapo Mom Cafe"; and the "Babysitter House."
Evaluations of the safety environment, including natural disasters, buildings and facilities, and traffic accidents, were also higher than the Seoul average in all categories.
This is further confirmed by the results of the "2024 Seoul Survey."
In the "Seoul Survey," Mapo-gu had the highest proportion of respondents among all districts?71.3%?who reported no inconvenience when using sidewalks, indicating high satisfaction with pedestrian environments.
In practice, Mapo-gu has created pedestrian-friendly spaces such as the popular tourist destination "Red Road" and "Kkirikkiri-gil" in Yeonnam-dong, and is actively carrying out improvement works such as lowering curbs to ensure unobstructed passage on crosswalks and other roads in the district.
Mapo-gu also received above-average scores on questions related to social fairness in the "Seoul Survey."
Social fairness was assessed across 10 subcategories, including educational opportunities, employment opportunities, taxation and payment of taxes, access to welfare benefits, political participation, and treatment based on gender.
Among these, "access to welfare benefits" scored 6.31 points, and "treatment based on gender" scored 6.09 points, making Mapo-gu the only district in Seoul to achieve scores in the 6-point range for these categories.
Currently, Mapo-gu is accelerating the implementation of "Silppuri Welfare," a Mapo-style welfare delivery system aimed at providing comprehensive welfare that permeates the lives of all residents?from children to adults, and from vulnerable groups to the general public.
In addition, the district is focusing its administrative resources on creating a women-friendly city by promoting various employment and entrepreneurship programs for women with career experience and establishing a dedicated service desk for such women at the Mapo Employment Agency.
Park Kangsoo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, "I feel a great sense of fulfillment and confidence that we are on the right path when I see that the lives of each and every resident are improving," adding, "We will continue to provide careful and compassionate administration so that everyone can feel, in their daily lives, that 'living in Mapo was the right choice.'"
