Gyeonggi Province to Promote Healing and Wellness Tourism... 15 Destinations to Be Certified This Year

Gyeonggi Province is promoting 'wellness tourism' for healing purposes.

On the 22nd, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization announced that they will certify 15 locations as wellness tourism destinations by the end of this year to promote wellness tourism, which refers to tourism activities aimed at health and healing.

Wellness tourism is a concept that combines wellness?which means wellbeing, fitness, or happiness?with tourism. In March 2023, the 'Ordinance on the Promotion and Support of Wellness Tourism in Gyeonggi Province' was enacted, and this is the first time related projects are being implemented.

This year, Gyeonggi Province has set the following goals: discovering 100 wellness tourism resources, providing consulting to 20 wellness tourism destinations and certifying 15 of them, attracting domestic and international visitors to wellness tourism sites, establishing a Gyeonggi Province wellness tourism council, and preparing for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's wellness and medical tourism contest.

Specifically, Gyeonggi Province will identify wellness tourism resources through recommendations from cities and counties, and conduct preliminary consulting for 20 destinations that represent the province. Afterward, 15 of these will be certified as wellness tourism destinations and will receive in-depth consulting and support programs.

Park Laehyuk, Director General of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "As this is the first comprehensive wellness tourism project being promoted by Gyeonggi Province, our goal is not only to meet short-term tourism demand but also to establish a sustainable industrial ecosystem. We aim to make wellness tourism a signature brand of Gyeonggi Province and offer new experiences to both domestic and international visitors."
