The Gwangju Namgu Council has urged that a branch of the National Assembly Library should be established in the Honam region to bridge the gap in information and culture.
On April 21, the Gwangju Namgu Council issued a statement, saying, "We strongly urge the National Assembly to establish a branch of the National Assembly Library in Gwangju Namgu for balanced regional development and to foster the growth of the knowledge and cultural industries in the Honam region."
The council explained, "In September last year, the National Assembly Library conducted a study on establishing a branch in the Honam region. As a result, there are high expectations within the local community for attracting a Gwangju branch of the National Assembly Library." They added, "Currently, the National Assembly Library has a branch only in Busan, while the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong region, and Yeongnam region each have branches of the National Assembly Library or the National Library of Korea."
They continued, "However, there is no national library in the Honam region that can serve as a representative institution." They emphasized, "Establishing a Gwangju branch of the National Assembly Library is an essential measure for balanced regional development and for closing the gap in access to knowledge and information in the Honam region."
Additionally, they stated, "Gwangju Namgu is a special cultural and educational district with abundant cultural and educational resources, and it boasts excellent accessibility as a transportation and commercial hub." They further noted, "In particular, the site of the former Veterans Hospital, located in the center of Namgu, is the optimal location for the Gwangju branch of the National Assembly Library, as it could reduce the time required to secure the necessary land by at least six months."
