Kim Sangwook: "Unification with Han Ducksoo Is Collusion... Will Consider Leaving If Yoon Is Not Expelled"

Holding a Press Conference to Demand a Sincere Apology

On April 21, Kim Sangwook, a member of the People Power Party, expressed his opposition to discussions on unifying the presidential candidates with Han Ducksoo, the acting president and prime minister. Kim also hinted at the possibility of leaving the party, demanding the expulsion of former President Yoon Sukyeol from party membership, among other conditions.

At a press conference held at the National Assembly that day, Kim stated, "I call on the People Power Party to immediately expel the president, to issue a sincere public apology for the 12·3 incident and promise measures to prevent its recurrence, to pledge that Han Ducksoo, who did not participate in the primary, will not collude in the future, and to swiftly reach an agreement on the supplementary budget." Having consistently voiced criticism of the party's actions following the imposition of martial law, Kim added, "It is obvious what the outcome will be if we proceed with the election without addressing these issues," and appealed, "I earnestly hope my sincere intentions are conveyed so that the party can take the right direction and the presidential race can reflect the will of the people."

After the press conference, Kim reiterated his opposition to the candidate unification talks with Han Ducksoo, which have been raised by some within the party, during a meeting with reporters. He emphasized, "It is important for a conservative party to uphold its principles," and argued, "If Han Ducksoo wishes to become the presidential candidate, he should naturally participate in the primary. Discussing unification with the candidate who won the primary, when Han did not participate in the primary, is a violation of principle." He continued, "Han Ducksoo is free to run, but if he does, he should go all the way as an independent. If he seeks unification with the People Power Party candidate, what meaning does the party's primary hold?"

Kim, who has called for a complete break with former President Yoon, also hinted at the possibility of leaving the party if his demands, such as expulsion, are not accepted. Regarding the background of the press conference, he said, "(The press conference) is to urge the party to change and to properly adhere to its principles," but added, "If things do not go as I hope, I cannot help but consider my future with the party," trailing off. Kim also stated, "I want to pursue healthy conservative politics; I do not wish for the party to become an extreme right-wing or reactionary party," and added, "If such a possibility disappears, it is only natural that I would have to reconsider my position."
