Gyeongbuk Regional Hanwoo Brand "Champum Hanwoo" Makes First 120kg Export to Hong Kong

Gyeongbuk Province announced that it has exported its regional Hanwoo beef brand, "Champum Hanwoo," to the Hong Kong market for the first time.


On April 18, Gyeongbuk Province held a shipment ceremony for Champum Hanwoo at the main store in Chilgok, after which the beef was exported to Hong Kong. This export is particularly significant as it marks the first time the Gyeongbuk-wide brand, Champum Hanwoo, has been exported under its own name.

Champum Hanwoo is the regional Hanwoo beef brand of Gyeongsangbuk-do, the largest Hanwoo-producing region in Korea. It began as an agricultural cluster to revitalize the local livestock industry and was established with investments from Hanwoo farmers and regional livestock cooperatives within Gyeongbuk.


The initial shipment to Hong Kong consists of 120kg of Hanwoo beef (market value: 10 million KRW), including sirloin, tenderloin, striploin, and top round cuts. This first export is expected to serve as an opportunity to showcase the excellence of Gyeongbuk Hanwoo, the largest Hanwoo-producing region in Korea.


After the sale of this initial shipment, the plan is to expand local sales channels in Hong Kong, such as shopping malls and large food ingredient marts, with the goal of supplying 2 tons per month.


In particular, although Korea has effectively lost its status as a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-free country due to a recent outbreak in Jeonnam, quarantine standards for countries where FMD has occurred differ by importing country.


Accordingly, since Hong Kong allows imports only from regions that have not had FMD outbreaks in the past year, it is possible to export Hanwoo beef produced in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which remains an FMD-free area.


Kim Joo-ryeong, Director of the Agricultural and Livestock Distribution Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, stated, "Through this first export to the Hong Kong market, we aim to promote the excellence of Gyeongbuk Hanwoo and expand our export markets," adding, "We will provide full support to introduce safe and high-quality Gyeongbuk Hanwoo not only to Hong Kong but also to consumers around the world."
