Lee Jaemyung Achieves Landslide Victory
Kim Dongyeon at 7.5%, Kim Kyungsoo at 4.3%
Lee Jaemyung, former leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, achieved a landslide victory with 88% of the votes in the Chungcheong region, the first stop of the party's nationwide primary to select its presidential candidate.
At the joint campaign rally for the Democratic Party’s Chungcheong regional primary held at Cheongju Gymnasium in North Chungcheong Province on April 19, Park Beomgye, chair of the party’s central election commission, announced that former leader Lee received 57,757 votes, accounting for 88.15% of the total. Kim Dongyeon, governor of Gyeonggi Province, secured 4,883 votes (7.54%), while Kim Kyungsoo, former governor of South Gyeongsang Province, garnered 2,790 votes (4.31%).
This primary was conducted as a public participation primary, with the results reflecting 50% from dues-paying party members and 50% from a public opinion poll.
Out of 111,863 eligible voters in the Chungcheong region, 64,730 cast valid ballots, resulting in a turnout of 57.87%. Among 110,131 dues-paying party members, 63,460 cast valid votes (57.62%). Of the 1,332 regional delegates in the Chungcheong region, 1,270 cast valid votes, marking a turnout of 73.33%.
