Gwangju Goryeoin Village "Yurt Experience": Walking Through Memories

Restoration of Central Asian Traditional Dwellings
Indirect Experience of Forced Relocation History

The "Yurt Experience Program," operated by Gwangju Goryeoin Village, is attracting visitors every weekend. This unique historical education content allows participants to directly see, touch, and learn about the lives and culture of Goryeoin by restoring the yurt, the traditional dwelling of Central Asian nomads.

Gwangju Goryeoin Village "Yurt Experience": Walking Through Memories The unique cultural experience program called the "Yurt Experience Program," operated by the Gwangju Goryeoin Village, is gaining great popularity. Provided by Goryeoin Village

According to Goryeoin Village on April 18, the yurt is a circular portable tent in which Goryeoin actually lived after being forcibly relocated to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and other regions. Goryeoin Village has recreated this yurt in the front yard of its cultural center as a permanent exhibition. Inside, household items, clothing, photographs, and other materials depicting the lifestyle of that time are on display.

On weekends, a historical experience program guided by a docent from the Goryeoin Village Residents Tourism Office is also offered. Participants can choose from activities such as "Goryeoin Ilbo Rubbing Experience," "Making a Model of the Primorsky Krai Independence Gate," "Forced Relocation Train Puzzle," or "Making a Mood Lamp of General Hong Beomdo." The program is free for children aged five and above up to middle school students, accompanied by a guardian, and up to 16 people can register for each session in advance.

A representative from Goryeoin Village stated, "The yurt is not just a living space, but a cultural heritage symbolizing the harsh lives of Goryeoin who had to survive in unfamiliar lands," and added, "We hope this experience will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the history of forced relocation and the community's will to survive."
