A Unique Encounter Between City and Architecture... Seoul City Opens Seoul Urban Architecture School

Operates from Next Month Until November
Offers Lectures, Hands-On Experiences, and Field Trips

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 18th that it will operate the '2025 Seoul Urban Architecture School' from next month until November to provide opportunities for experience in architecture.

Marking its 11th anniversary this year, the Seoul Urban Architecture School is the only urban architecture school in Korea operated by a public institution, where citizen participation programs are conducted. This year, a themed curriculum will be prepared under the brand 'SCALE.' 'SCALE' stands for 'Seoul City Architecture & Lecture Event' and embodies the concept of accumulation, a core element of urban architecture.

The education will be conducted over seven months at the Seoul Urban Architecture Center, focusing on three main themes: Seoul, city, and architecture. The program is divided into lectures, experiences, and field trips, and will be offered as single or multiple sessions tailored to the levels of children, adolescents, and citizens. Anyone can participate.

The lectures will be held 20 times in total to help participants acquire basic knowledge about Seoul’s urban and architectural aspects. Through experiences such as making windows and creating neighborhoods, participants can develop interest in architecture and understand the process of neighborhood formation. The structure-making experience is expected to help adolescents aspiring to become architects understand architectural structures and explore career paths.

The field trips will be conducted by exploring eight different areas. A separate 'Citizen Participation Field Trip' program reflecting the most preferred routes by Seoul citizens will also be held.

Notably, this year the 'First-Time Architecture School' will be held, where architects visit multicultural families and marginalized groups to conduct classes. Models and results created by participants in the experience programs will be exhibited at the Seoul Urban Architecture Center.

Applications for all programs can be submitted monthly starting from the 21st. The city plans to select participants through a lottery to provide opportunities for many citizens to join.

Choi Jin-seok, Director of the Housing Office of Seoul, stated, "We hope many citizens participate in the Seoul Urban Architecture School to develop interest in the city and architecture and enhance their insight."
