The international housing welfare nonprofit organization Korea Habitat announced on the 18th that it has completed houses number 18 and 19 for the descendants of independence activists.
Korea Habitat and singer Sean held dedication ceremonies for new homes for the descendants of independence activists on the 16th and 17th in Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do, and Daejeon, respectively. These homes, prepared for the families of patriot An Sang-tae and patriot Kwak Byung-do, were built with funds raised through the annual donation marathon "815 Run" held every Liberation Day.
Patriot An Sang-tae was recognized for his efforts in criticizing the Japanese colonial regime and working towards resolving national issues and enlightening farmers, receiving a Presidential Citation in 2005. Notably, An Sang-tae’s great-granddaughter personally applied to Korea Habitat with their story and was selected. The story stated, "The earthen house, built over 70 years ago, has mice running between the roof, and the interior is full of mold," and "As a granddaughter, I wanted to help my 90-year-old grandmother who always lives with gratitude despite the cold and harsh environment."
The family of patriot An Sang-tae said, "It has been a very long time since we last saw our mother smile so brightly," and "We are very grateful for restoring her bright smile." Patriot Kwak Byung-do, who was involved in raising military funds for the independence movement and was awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Medal in 2000, had house number 19 in Daejeon dedicated to his descendants.
Last winter, singer Sean, along with Unknown Crew members Lee Young-pyo, Choi Si-won, Yoon Se-a, Lim Se-mi, Go Han-min, and Lee Si-woo, personally participated in the construction volunteer work for houses 18 and 19. Sean said, "It is meaningful to express my heart to the independence activists who sacrificed for the country and their descendants. The house was built with gratitude together with the many runners who ran alongside us," adding, "Please continue to show great interest in the upcoming 2025 815 Run until we dedicate the 100th house."
Korea Habitat and singer Sean plan to hold the 815 Run again this Liberation Day, the 80th anniversary of liberation, to help descendants of independence activists live comfortably in their later years. With funds from the 2020?2024 815 Run, houses have been dedicated in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do (house 1); Dongducheon, Gyeonggi-do (house 2); Cheongyang, Chungcheongnam-do (house 3); Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do (house 4); Ulsan (house 5); Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do (house 6); Cheongsong, Gyeongsangbuk-do (house 7); Gurye, Jeollanam-do (house 8); Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do (house 9); Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do (house 10); Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do (house 11); Yesan, Chungcheongnam-do (house 12); Gangneung, Gangwon-do (house 13); Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do (house 14); Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do (house 15); Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do (house 16); Daegu (house 17); Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do (house 18); and Daejeon (house 19).
