Korea-Taiwan Display Exchange Cooperation Group Discusses MicroLED Collaboration in Taiwan

Discussion on MicroLED Cooperation Held on the 15th and 16th
Exchange with Taiwanese Companies at 'Touch Taiwan 2025'

The Korea Display Industry Association announced on the 16th that it formed the 'Korea-Taiwan Display Exchange Cooperation Group' with domestic display materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) companies over two days starting from the 15th to discuss cooperation in the microLED field.

This exchange cooperation group with Taiwan is the second of its kind following last year, aimed at expanding global technological cooperation in the microLED sector and securing an export base for Korean companies overseas.

Recently, microLED has emerged as a new growth driver in the display market amid complex external factors such as China's expansion of low-cost LCD supply, accelerated OLED investments, and the US-China tariff war. MicroLED utilizes inorganic-based materials resistant to oxygen and moisture, achieving more than twice the lifespan compared to existing technologies, and enables infinite expansion through seamless panel connections. However, high manufacturing costs and process difficulties have delayed market development.

During the visit to Taiwan, the exchange cooperation group held a meeting with 'PlayNitride,' a microLED chip manufacturer, followed by a technology exchange session with major Taiwanese companies such as AUO and Innolux at the 'Touch Taiwan 2025' exhibition hosted by the Taiwan Display Union Association (TDUA). The association explained that it confirmed Taiwan's leading microLED technology and created business cooperation opportunities for continuous technological exchanges with key companies.

Discussions were held during the exchange meeting to explore cooperation such as joint research between companies from both countries.

Taiwan, led by companies like AUO, continues proactive investments and, along with China, drives the competition for technological leadership within Asia. Frank Ko, CEO of AUO and chairman of TDUA, stated, "We hope that this exchange, following last year’s, will mark the beginning of full-fledged cooperation between Korean and Taiwanese display companies to grow the microLED market."

Lee Dong-wook, vice chairman of the association, emphasized, "Korea and Taiwan have a relationship where competition and cooperation coexist, creating a structure capable of building a mutually developmental ecosystem. In fields where core challenging technologies necessary for market expansion, such as microLED, have not yet been resolved, securing technological competitiveness through joint research between countries is crucial."

The association plans to invite major Taiwanese companies during the K-Display exhibition in August to facilitate technology and procurement consultation meetings with domestic companies and share Taiwanese companies’ business strategies through the 'Display Business Forum.'
