A man who fled after being accused of attempted murder in 2009 turned himself in to the police station to renew his driver's license and was arrested after 16 years, facing trial.
On the 16th, the Eunpyeong Police Station in Seoul announced, "We arrested a man in his 60s, Mr. A, on charges of attempted murder on the 17th of last month." Mr. A is accused of attempting to kill Mr. B, a neighboring karaoke business owner who was a competitor, on October 19, 2009.
At the time, Mr. A went to Mr. B's karaoke business carrying a can filled with ignited thinner and a blunt weapon, intending to kill him. Mr. C, an employee at the karaoke, tried to stop him but suffered severe burns all over his body. The police were unable to apprehend Mr. A, who fled immediately after the incident, and the investigation was suspended.
However, on the 17th of last month, Mr. A voluntarily visited the Guro Police Station to renew his driver's license. After verifying his identity, the police arrested him. The Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office, which took over the case from the police, conducted a reinvestigation and on the 9th formally indicted Mr. A on charges of attempted murder. While the police applied charges of special intimidation for the attack on karaoke owner Mr. B and dismissed the case due to the statute of limitations, the prosecution judged that the attempted murder charge could also be applied and requested the police to reinvestigate.
