Gyeonggi Province issued a low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) outbreak warning across the entire province on the 15th.
This measure was taken following a total of 18 cases reported in seven areas including Pocheon and Dongducheon since February, with nine cases detected from the 1st to the 10th of this month, showing a spreading trend.
Low pathogenic avian influenza is classified as a Category 3 livestock infectious disease and is caused by the H9N2 type avian influenza virus.
The main symptoms include respiratory symptoms (runny nose, coughing, difficulty breathing), digestive symptoms (diarrhea, loss of appetite), and decreased egg production (reduced egg laying, production of deformed eggs). It is a representative productivity-reducing disease that requires caution as damage is amplified by co-infections with colibacillosis or infectious bronchitis in chickens.
Although the occurrence of low pathogenic avian influenza in the province has decreased for two consecutive years since 2023, the rapid increase this month has raised concerns about its spread.
To prevent damage from low pathogenic avian influenza, Gyeonggi Province urged strict implementation of quarantine measures including ▲installation and operation of disinfection facilities at farm entrances ▲minimizing entry of outsiders and vehicles ▲wearing protective clothing and disinfecting when vaccination teams enter farms ▲disinfecting inside and outside farms at least twice a week ▲installing and managing nets inside livestock barns ▲conducting daily clinical observations, and adherence to basic quarantine rules.
