The Hongseong-gun Public Health Center in Chungnam has urged residents to receive vaccinations before traveling abroad, as measles outbreaks continue in countries with high rates of international travel.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection transmitted through the air by coughing or sneezing. Symptoms include fever, rash, and grayish-white spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots).
More than 90% of people with insufficient immunity to measles become infected after contact with a patient, but the disease can be effectively prevented through vaccination.
The public health center provides measles vaccinations for children eligible for the national immunization program under the age of 12.
An official from the Hongseong-gun Public Health Center stated, "Since measles is spreading worldwide, we recommend checking your measles (MMR) vaccination status before traveling abroad and, if necessary, receiving two doses at least six weeks before departure, with a minimum interval of four weeks." The official also advised, "If you experience symptoms such as fever accompanied by cough, runny nose, or rash after returning from overseas travel, please visit a medical institution, inform them of your recent travel history, and seek medical attention."
