"Strengthening Radioactivity Safety Measures
to Protect Students' Health"
The Gumi Office of Education under the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education announced on the 15th that it will expand safety inspections for radioactive hazardous substances in food ingredients used in school meals from April to November.
Gyeongbuk Gumi Office of Education is conducting radioactive testing of school meal ingredients in 2025.
This inspection will be conducted monthly for 139 kindergartens, elementary, middle, high, and special schools in Gumi.
The Gumi Office of Education explained that, based on the "Ordinance on the Supply of Safe School Meal Ingredients from Radioactive and Other Hazardous Substances" by the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education, it collects and inspects samples of agricultural, marine products, and processed foods to protect students' health and minimize risks from radioactive contamination.
The inspection method includes both in-house inspections (122 cases) using the food radioactivity measuring equipment owned by the Gumi Office of Education and precise inspections (17 cases) commissioned to the Gyeongbuk Institute of Health and Environment, a professional analysis agency.
From this year, the Gumi Office of Education has expanded the scope of precise inspections to increase reliability, and all inspection results will be made public on the Gumi Office of Education website.
All inspections conducted so far have received a "compliant" judgment, proving the safety of school meals.
Nam Sungkwan, Superintendent of the Gumi Office of Education, stated, "As concerns among parents about the discharge of radioactive contaminated water into the ocean are growing, we will continue to conduct radioactivity safety inspections on food ingredients used in school meals to ensure that safe and trustworthy meals are provided."
