Jongno-gu Operates Sunragil Program Every Tuesday to Sunday

"Sunra Ceremony Reenactment Event" Held Every Weekend

Jongno-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Munheon) operates the 'Sunra-gil, Sunra-gun Interpretation Program' and reenacts the 'Gatekeeper Sunra Ceremony' to inherit and preserve the region's traditional culture and enhance its cultural value.

The Sunra-gun were soldiers who guarded the area around the Jongmyo Shrine walls during the Joseon Dynasty to prevent various accidents such as theft and fires. The interpretation program takes place on Seosunra-gil, where the stories of the Sunra-gun who protected the city in the dark are deeply layered. Participants can enjoy a guided tour of the area with in-depth explanations from the interpreter. The program operates when three or more applicants register. Applications can be made on the district office website at least three days before the departure date.


Jongno-gu has also established an experience center where visitors can try on the Sunra-gun uniform, Sunra-bok. Visitors can go to Gyeongsuso (33 Changdeokgung-gil), where the Sunra-gun stayed at night, from Tuesday to Sunday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The experience is completely free of charge.


The reenactment of the Sunra ceremony is held every weekend and public holiday until December 28. The procession starts at 3 p.m. from Gwanghwamun Woldae and proceeds to Insadong Cultural Street. More than 50 Joseon Dynasty soldiers, including Sunra-gun, gatekeepers, gapsa, jeongbyeong, and daejol, participate, providing a rich spectacle. On the day of the event, visitors can also take commemorative photos with the Sunra-gun near Exit 6 of Anguk Station at Bukinsa Madang.
