Fire Authorities: "Voices of Trapped Workers Heard in Gwangmyeong Collapse... Rescue Operations Underway" Yonhap News

At the underground tunnel construction site of the Sinansan Line in Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi Province, the Fire Special Response Team reported that they have approached a worker trapped underground following a collapse accident. However, it is known that the rescue operation is facing difficulties due to the presence of gas around the rescue area.

According to the police and fire authorities on the 11th, rescue workers belonging to the Special Response Team of the Gyeonggi Fire Disaster Headquarters approached close enough to hear the voice of worker A, who was trapped underground due to the accident. A is an excavator operator who had phone communication with the rescue authorities after being trapped; although contact was lost several times, the worker was ultimately confirmed to be alive.

Rescue workers reportedly stated that although they could not see A’s face, they could hear his voice. However, there were also reports that a gas odor was detected around the trapped site, causing difficulties in the rescue operation. The police and fire authorities suspect that a gas pipeline runs through the area and have requested gas shutoff through the Korea Gas Safety Corporation. The rescue operation is expected to take a considerable amount of time.

Meanwhile, earlier that day at around 3:13 PM, a collapse occurred at the underground tunnel construction site of Section 5-2 of the Sinansan Line double-track railway near Yangji Intersection in Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong-si, where POSCO E&C is constructing. Due to this, worker A is trapped underground, and another worker is missing.
