Effects of New Town Influx, Birth Promotion, and Improved Living Conditions
Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 8th that as of 2024, its population increased by 2,391 compared to the previous year, recording a population growth rate of 2.65%. This achievement ranks first among county-level local governments nationwide and 13th among the 266 basic local governments in the country.
The population growth trend in Muan-gun continues this year as well. At the end of December 2024, the population was 92,687, and as of the end of March 2025, it reached 93,446, marking an increase of 759 people in just three months.
The number of newborns has also increased noticeably. In 2024, 547 babies were born, a 16% increase compared to the previous year, and as of the end of March 2025, 134 births were registered, showing a 10% higher growth rate year-on-year.
The county believes that the continuous population growth is mainly due to the steady influx of young people and newlyweds centered around new towns such as Namanak and Oryong districts, the expansion of living and cultural infrastructure in rural areas, and improvements in the residential environment through urban regeneration.
In addition, the county's proactive population and childbirth policies?such as providing direct and indirect support totaling approximately 120 million KRW to every child born and raised in Muan until the age of 18?are also key drivers in realizing 'Muan, a great place to raise children' and contributing to population growth.
Governor Kim San stated, "The increase in Muan-gun's population and the number of newborns is a valuable achievement created by all our residents together," adding, "To reach a population of 100,000, we will vigorously pursue population policies to make Muan a city where it is easy to have and raise children and where the younger generation wants to settle down."
