Based on Swift and Fair Damage Assessment
Expansion of 1,000 Temporary Housing Units
Yeongdeok County in North Gyeongsang Province has announced plans to swiftly carry out emergency restoration work after a recent massive wildfire caused large-scale damage to residential homes. To this end, the county has formed a special task force (TF team) comprising three departments and three towns and townships.
The wildfire that broke out in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province on the 22nd of last month spread to Yeongdeok County by the 25th, burning 8,050 hectares in the region over four days, resulting in 21 casualties and damage to homes of over 1,500 households.
Recognizing the urgency of emergency restoration and stabilization of housing for displaced residents, Yeongdeok County established a plan on the 1st to expand temporary housing facilities. By securing a budget, including national funds, by the 31st of next month, the county aims to provide 600 units of temporary housing and 400 units of permanent housing, totaling 1,000 units.
To achieve this, Yeongdeok County formed a special task force called the “Temporary Housing Modular Home TF Team” on the 7th, led by Deputy Governor Moon Sungjun, to ensure rapid and effective project execution.
The TF team consists of 43 experts in civil engineering, architecture, administration, and industry from three departments?Urban Design, Construction, and Safety and Disaster?and three towns and townships: Yeongdeok-eup, Jipum-myeon, and Chuksan-myeon. The team is divided into four groups: General Support, Demolition, Infrastructure, and Temporary Housing Installation.
Through the formation of this TF team, the county plans to closely and swiftly advance the project, from administrative procedures such as obtaining consent and various permits related to temporary facilities, to securing budgets, confirming sites, designing, and cooperating with specialized facility manufacturers. By significantly shortening the construction period, the county aims to minimize the suffering of displaced residents.
In addition, Yeongdeok County, in cooperation with the North Gyeongsang Provincial Government, began on-site damage assessments on the 28th of last month, the day the wildfire was extinguished. The first round of assessments is currently being finalized. By the 15th, the county plans to confirm the results after verifying the accuracy and fairness of the damage assessment through a service contract with 20 loss adjusters from the Korea Association of Loss Adjusters.
County Governor Kim Kwangyeol stated, “Just as the scale and shock of this wildfire damage are immense, so too are the collective will and efforts to help the victims and revive the local community. Together with our staff, we are dedicating our administrative resources to recovery and victim support, even giving up our weekends. We will devote all our capabilities and resources to the material and psychological recovery of the victims and the community.”
