Declaration in Front of Admiral Yi Sun-sin Statue at Gwanghwamun Square
Slogan Expected to Emphasize "National Unity and Generational Change"
Ahn Cheol-soo, a member of the People Power Party, will officially announce his candidacy for the 21st presidential election on the 8th.
On the 7th, a representative from Ahn's office stated that Ahn plans to declare his presidential bid at 11 a.m. on the 8th in front of the Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul.
This marks the first official presidential candidacy announcement among major People Power Party contenders since former President Yoon Seok-youl was impeached on the 4th.
Ahn is said to have chosen Gwanghwamun Square as the location for his announcement with the slogan of national unity and generational change, hoping for the harmony of the people.
On the morning of the announcement, Ahn explained on Channel A's 'Political Signal,' "Although Gwanghwamun Square has hosted various protests of different natures, it should actually be a symbol of national unity," explaining why he chose Gwanghwamun as the site for his presidential bid.
He added, "It was the capital for 500 years during the Joseon Dynasty, and from this point, I intend to reaffirm my determination to bring about a generational shift and revive our country's economy."
