Jeollanam-do announced on the 2nd that Yeosu has been selected for the 2025 Preliminary International Conference District Revitalization Support Project, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The "Preliminary International Conference District Revitalization Support Project," implemented for the first time this year by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is part of the 5th Basic Plan for the Development of the International Conference Industry (2024-2028).

This project targets regions with the potential to develop into international conference complex districts but have been excluded from existing support, such as subsidies for attracting international conferences, due to not meeting legal requirements like possessing international conference facilities. It aims to promote balanced development of international conference hosting capabilities.

After accepting applications for the project in February, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism finalized four preliminary districts, including Yeosu, Gunsan, Ulsan, and Wonju, through a process of document review, on-site inspection, and business plan presentations.

The Yeosu Preliminary International Conference District, centered around the Yeosu Expo Convention Center and including the Sky Tower, hotels, and more, covers approximately 960,000 square meters. With its successful experience hosting large-scale international events such as the World Expo, Yeosu demonstrated its competitiveness as an international conference district by highlighting the synergy between international conferences, marine leisure, and the tourism industry.

Additionally, Yeosu City conducted collaborative marketing with organizations such as the Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority and the Yeosu Tourism MICE Association. Through this process, the city's strengths in attracting and hosting international conferences were comprehensively evaluated and received high marks from the judges.

Through this selection, Jeollanam-do and Yeosu City will receive up to 300 million KRW in national funding over the next three years. As a preliminary international conference district, they plan to implement various MICE revitalization projects to strengthen competitiveness in attracting international conferences, including: developing and promoting a preliminary international conference district brand, creating and operating customized tourism products, developing a specialized MICE one-stop service platform, and establishing participant-friendly transportation connections.
