Promoting the "Reading Education Program with Authors" for Elementary Students
Fostering Happy Growth and Deep Reading Experiences through Author Encounters
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education will implement the "Reading Education Program with Authors" for elementary school students from April to December as part of the Reading Change project, which supports happy growth.
The Reading Change project is conducted to strengthen students' reading abilities and foster sound character. This special reading encounter with authors aims to provide students with diverse reading experiences.
The Reading Education Program with Authors consists of the "Happy Writing" project, which links reading and writing, and the author-invited event "Book Talk Hanmadang."
For Happy Writing with Authors, 43 Busan children's literature authors affiliated with the Busan Children's Literature Association will visit 40 elementary schools. Each class will have two 40-minute sessions, totaling 80 minutes per visit.
This is a class-based reading project where students directly interact and communicate with authors, read books together, share thoughts, and write with the authors. Through Happy Writing, convergent reading education is practiced.
For the Author-Invited Book Talk Hanmadang, authors of books previously selected for One Book One Busan will be invited to 50 elementary schools. These events provide opportunities for students to meet authors, participate in reading quizzes, and attend author signing sessions, allowing for deeper reading experiences through interaction with both authors and books.
Before the author visits, students read the Book Talk book and prepare questions in advance. During the 80-minute session with the author, they discuss the background, writing intentions, and themes of the work. Authors may give out signed items or postcards as gifts, and students may receive autographed books during the signing session.
Kim Kyungja, Director of Early Childhood and Elementary Care Policy at the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, "This Reading Education Program with Authors will be a great opportunity to increase students' interest in books and help them develop deep reading habits," adding, "We will continue to support and expand participatory and experiential reading classes that help students' holistic growth."
