Pukyong National University Selected for Humanities Korea 3.0 as a World-Class Humanities Research Institute

Global China Research Institute to Receive 4.8 Billion KRW Over Six Years
Aiming to Become a World-Class Humanities Research Institute

Pukyong National University (President Bae Sanghoon) has been selected for the Humanities Korea 3.0 (HK3.0) support project by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, aimed at fostering world-class humanities research institutes.

Pukyong National University's Global China Research Institute (Director Lee Bogo, Professor at the School of Global Liberal Arts) has been chosen for the research hub category of this project. Starting this year, it will receive 800 million KRW annually for up to six years, totaling 4.8 billion KRW, to conduct humanities research under the agenda of "East Asian Youth Studies: Constructing Humanities for Youth in a Fluid Society."

The Humanities Korea (HK) support project is a representative national initiative for supporting the humanities. Since 2007, it has focused on nurturing university-affiliated humanities research institutes, establishing research infrastructure, and producing world-class research outcomes.

Humanities Korea 3.0, newly established this year, continues to support the advancement of the humanities by building on the achievements of the previous Humanities Korea projects (HK/HK+). A total of 10 institutions were selected this year, including eight research hub institutions such as Pukyong National University and two consortium-type institutions.

Pukyong National University has been recognized as a hub for fostering regional humanities by being consecutively selected for both the previous Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) project and the new Humanities Korea 3.0 project.

Accordingly, the Global China Research Institute at Pukyong National University plans to address issues such as population decline, regional extinction, and youth generation crises faced by cities across Asia and Busan, by establishing "Youth Studies" as a new academic field. The goal is to overcome the crises faced by youth in Busan and East Asia and to expand their potential as a driving force for a new era.

To achieve this, the institute will establish a long-term transnational and interdisciplinary joint research system for East Asian Youth Studies and operate a new graduate cooperative program related to East Asian Youth Studies. Additionally, to vitalize region- and life-oriented youth humanities, the institute plans to establish the Asia Regional Youth Humanities Lab (also known as Aji Cheonginmun Lab).

Director Lee Bogo of the Global China Research Institute stated, "We will strive to build an archive and shared infrastructure for East Asian youth research, and will establish the institute as a true East Asian hub for humanities research, expanding its status as an international humanities research institute based in Busan."
