8 out of 10 Teachers in Daejeon Oppose Installing CCTV in Classrooms

Majority Believe It Does Not Help Prevent Incidents
89.6% of Teachers Think It Increases the Risk of Human Rights Violations

A survey revealed that 8 out of 10 teachers in the Daejeon area oppose the so-called 'Haneul Law,' which proposes installing CCTV in classrooms.

According to the Daejeon Teachers' Union on the 1st, a survey conducted among 316 teachers from local kindergartens, elementary, middle, high schools, and special schools regarding the mandatory installation of school CCTV showed that 83.8% opposed the plan to install CCTV in classrooms, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

Most teachers expressed the opinion that mandatory installation of classroom CCTV would not help prevent incidents like the case of Kim Haneul, a girl who was murdered on the premises of an elementary school in Daejeon.

Instead, 89.6% of teachers believed that mandatory CCTV installation would increase the possibility of human rights violations. Additionally, 89.2% thought that conflicts among school members would intensify.

Lee Yoon-kyung, chairperson of the Daejeon Teachers' Union, stated, "The causes of accidents must be thoroughly examined, and effective recurrence prevention measures should be established based on the opinions of school members."

This survey of teachers in the Daejeon area was included in a nationwide survey conducted by the Federation of Teachers' Unions (Teachers' Union) from the 26th to 28th of last month, targeting 3,682 teachers nationwide. In that survey, 92% (3,386 teachers) of all respondents opposed the installation of classroom CCTV, which was 8.2 percentage points higher than the response rate of Daejeon area teachers (83.8%).
