Aiming for Completion Before the 12th Buan Masil Festival
Buan County in North Jeolla Province announced on the 1st that it will install a pedestrian bridge connecting the Buan Haetteulmaru Local Garden and Jayeonmadang to enhance convenience for residents.
The Buan Haetteulmaru Local Garden was registered as the third local garden in North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province on November 13, 2023. Covering a total area of 334,536 square meters, it is adjacent to the Buan Terminal and close to downtown Buan-eup, providing excellent transportation and accessibility. The area is also rich in ecological network resources, including the Sinuncheon Ecological Stream and Buan Jayeonmadang.

In particular, the Sinuncheon walking trail features a 2.1 km bald cypress path, serving as a resident-friendly space where local people can walk and exercise daily. However, the bridge connecting Haetteulmaru and Jayeonmadang is located far away, leading to inconvenience and dissatisfaction among users.
Accordingly, the county requested a budget from North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province to install a pedestrian bridge 4 meters wide and 27 meters long between Haetteulmaru and Jayeonmadang. In November 2023, they secured a special adjustment grant of 1 billion KRW and began the construction project.
After securing the project budget in 2023, design services and administrative procedures such as cost review were carried out from January 2024. The contractor was selected through an open competitive bidding process, and construction is currently underway.
The design of the pedestrian bridge is inspired by the boat-shaped sculpture at the entrance of Sinuncheon, symbolizing a boat flowing along the stream. A small watchtower will be installed on the sail of the boat to function as an observation tower. Although the height to the watchtower is only 3 meters, it is designed to provide a view, considering the surrounding area is flat.
Currently, after installing an access road for construction, piling work for the bridge piers has been completed. The piers have been installed on the piles, followed by the main boat-shaped structure and the framework for the deck.
Going forward, a spiral staircase to the watchtower and deck flooring will be installed. After removing the soil blocking the stream and completing the painting work, all construction will be finished.
All work is scheduled to be completed before the 12th Buan Masil Festival, the largest festival in Buan, which will be held in May. Once the pedestrian bridge is completed, it is expected not only to improve convenience for residents using the bald cypress path, but also to solve the issue of installing temporary bridges during the Masil Festival, resulting in multiple benefits.
