A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the central inland region of Myanmar, with the death toll rising to 694.
On the 29th (local time), AFP reported that the Myanmar military regime announced 694 confirmed deaths and 1,670 injuries related to the earthquake.
The death toll increased nearly fivefold in one day from the 144 reported by Min Aung Hlaing, the commander-in-chief of the Myanmar military government, the previous day.
Some estimates suggest that the number of deaths caused by the earthquake could exceed 10,000. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated in a report that there is a 71% probability that the death toll will exceed 10,000. According to the USGS, the probability of deaths exceeding 100,000 is analyzed at 36%.
