Support of up to 670,000 KRW per hectare for about 3,000 farms
Targeting farms practicing measures such as biochar application
Jeollanam-do has selected 2,687 farms to participate in the 2025 Low-Carbon Agriculture Program for the crop sector and will provide support.
The Low-Carbon Agriculture Program is a project that provides activity subsidies to farms that practice low-carbon farming activities such as mid-season drainage, shallow intermittent irrigation, and the application of biochar. From this year, autumn tillage has been added. Applications for autumn tillage activities will be accepted in the second half of the year.
The selected farms are those engaged in rice farming eligible for the basic public direct payment this year and agricultural corporations (farmers) managing more than 20 hectares.
Farms practicing water management (mid-season drainage and shallow intermittent irrigation) will receive 310,000 KRW per hectare, and those applying biochar will receive 364,000 KRW. Farms implementing both water management and biochar application can receive up to 670,000 KRW per hectare.
During rice cultivation, water management reduces methane emissions and supplies oxygen to the soil, thereby reducing carbon emissions. Biochar, when incorporated into the soil before rice cultivation, can semi-permanently sequester carbon in the soil.
Yu Deokgyu, head of the Food and Horticulture Division of Jeollanam-do, said, "There is a growing awareness among farmers of participating in and responding to the climate crisis through low-carbon farming activities," and added, "We hope many farmers will join low-carbon farming activities for sustainable agriculture and rural communities."
