There Was a Reason for Early Morning Commutes... Suhyup Employee Embezzled 1 Billion Won from Safe

Stole 50,000 KRW Bills from the Vault Every Dawn Before Business Hours
Accomplice Who Helped Hide Also Arrested

Over 1 billion KRW in deposits disappeared from a Suhyup vault. The culprit turned out to be an internal employee. For years, he used the vault key entrusted to him to open the safe every dawn before his colleagues arrived and packed cash into a bag. After his final theft, he went into hiding but was apprehended at his parents' house. An acquaintance who provided him with a hideout was also arrested by the police.

The Goheung Police Station in Jeonnam announced on the 29th that they had arrested Mr. A (36), an employee of Goheung Suhyup, on charges of habitual theft. Mr. A is accused of repeatedly stealing bundles of 50,000 KRW bills from the Suhyup vault since the beginning of this month. The estimated loss, according to Suhyup, amounts to approximately 1.03 billion KRW.

According to the police, Mr. A was responsible for taking cash from the vault and distributing it to counter staff before business hours, and collecting the remaining money after business hours to return it to the vault. During this process, he used the key in his possession to open the vault and, with a pre-prepared bag, took small amounts of cash every dawn.

On the morning of the 25th, Mr. A stole money for the last time and fled. He was arrested at his parents' residence in Gwangyang, Jeonnam, at 10:20 p.m. the same day. At the time of arrest, he had only 11 million KRW in his possession. The police are questioning Mr. A about the whereabouts of the remaining stolen funds, but he is refusing to testify and remains silent.

The police also arrested Mr. B (36), an acquaintance who knowingly received cash and provided a hideout, on charges of receiving stolen property and aiding and abetting a criminal’s concealment and escape. However, Mr. A’s parents are exempt from punishment as they are immediate family and were only questioned as witnesses.

The police are continuing to investigate the use of the stolen money and the possibility of additional hidden funds.
