Tower-Type Media Art Incorporating Domestic Technology
Remodeling Project Elevates It as a Leading Landmark
Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Park Sunghyun, hereafter YGPA) announced on the 28th that the Yeosu World Expo Sky Tower has been selected for the second consecutive time as a ‘Jeonnam Unique Venue’ organized by Jeollanam-do Province.
Unique Venue refers to a ‘distinctive event facility’ that can host MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, Exhibition) events based on unique local infrastructure that represents the region.
Jeollanam-do Province selects ‘Jeonnam Unique Venues’ every two years to discover attractive event spaces. The Sky Tower, recognized for its originality and uniqueness as a marine tourism landmark through remodeling, has been selected again for 2025.
The Sky Tower is a building that was transformed from a cement silo into an observatory during the 2012 Yeosu World Expo. It gained attention as a work of art featuring various attractions such as a pipe organ inspired by “Living Ocean, Breathing Coast,” seawater desalination facilities, and an observatory. The 20-story observatory, standing 67 meters tall, offers a unique view of the beautiful coastline and is equipped with infrastructure that allows for customized events in independent spaces.
Recently, the Sky Tower has strengthened its status as a marine tourism attraction and enhanced visitor convenience by adding a media art space, installing a water curtain, renovating the observatory, and replacing nighttime landscape lighting through remodeling.
On the first floor, a video room reinterpreting the Bangudae Petroglyphs in a modern way and content inspired by the nature of Yeosu attract visitors’ attention. Three semicircular water curtains, inheriting the symbolism and meaning of the original desalination facilities, represent Korea, which is bordered by the East, West, and South Seas.
The observatory creates a warm atmosphere using bright white tones and wood materials, providing a unique experience of “walking on the sea” and delivering a message of “coexistence with the sea” through the transparent glass floor and water curtains.
The exterior features a striking red accent inspired by the camellia flower of Odongdo in Yeosu, leaving a strong impression. At night, the changing exterior lights and the light beaming toward the night sky evoke the image of a lighthouse on the South Sea. It is expected to play a new role as a famous night view spot in Korea in the future.
President Park Sunghyun said, “The Sky Tower being selected as a Unique Venue for the second consecutive time is a testament to its symbolism and differentiated value being recognized once again,” and added, “We will continue to actively utilize it as a representative MICE event venue to further invigorate the local economy.”
