Lee Joonseung, Deputy Mayor, Says "Let's Lead as a Power Semiconductor Hub City"
Twelve Experts from Universities, Research Institutes, Semiconductor Associations, and Companies Attend
Busan City held its first committee meeting of the year to explore ways to vitalize the local semiconductor industry.
Busan City (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) announced on the 28th that it held the first 2025 Busan Metropolitan City Semiconductor Industry Promotion Committee meeting in the conference room on the 7th floor of City Hall on the 27th.
The meeting was attended by 12 committee members, all semiconductor experts from various sectors including universities, research institutes, semiconductor-related associations, and companies, to discuss measures to revitalize the semiconductor industry in the Busan area.
This meeting was organized to provide professional advice on the 2025 Busan Metropolitan City Semiconductor Industry Promotion Implementation Plan and to discuss future strategies for fostering the semiconductor industry.
Lee Junseung, Deputy Mayor of Busan, is conducting the first 2025 meeting of the Busan Semiconductor Industry Promotion Committee on the 27th.
The city established the first Busan Metropolitan City Semiconductor Industry Promotion Comprehensive Plan (2025-2029) in December last year, which includes strategies to vitalize the Busan semiconductor ecosystem, following positive developments in the industry such as the designation of a specialized cluster for power semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment in 2023, and the designation of a special opportunity development zone for the power semiconductor sector in 2024.
During this meeting, in-depth discussions were held on the 2025 Busan Semiconductor Industry Promotion Implementation Plan for the concrete execution of the comprehensive plan, as well as on the future direction the city should take.
Various opinions were presented at the meeting, including attracting promising companies to lead the region, keeping up with global trends in semiconductor technology, actively utilizing systems such as specialized clusters and special opportunity development zones, fostering local high-level talent, and the direction Busan City should pursue.
Additionally, diverse suggestions were made for fostering the Busan semiconductor industry, such as 'international cooperation measures in the semiconductor field' linked to the International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials (ICSCRM), 'measures to foster the high-efficiency compound semiconductor industry' in line with central government policies, and bold initiatives to secure leadership in the still nascent 'next-generation power semiconductor industry.'
Busan City plans to actively reflect the matters discussed at this meeting in policies to foster and support the local semiconductor industry, thereby strengthening its drive to become a global semiconductor hub city.
To support the semiconductor industry, which is drawing attention as a future growth engine, the city launched the Semiconductor Industry Promotion Committee, including experts from various fields, and held a kickoff meeting last November.
The main roles of the committee are to establish and implement the basic plan for fostering the Busan semiconductor industry, and to develop and advise on policies for its activation.
The opinions presented at the kickoff meeting held on November 22 last year?such as building next-generation semiconductor research and production facilities, fostering semiconductor talent through collaboration with local universities and companies, and industrial cooperation with regions specializing in future vehicles (Gwangju, Chungcheong) and aerospace (Gyeongnam)?will be reflected in this year's implementation plan and actively pursued.
Lee Joonseung, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs of Busan City, emphasized, "Busan is the only city in the country equipped with a public production facility dedicated to silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors. Based on this, we will actively attract companies capable of leading the future Busan semiconductor industry, foster local talent, and promote research and development in parallel to solidify our status as a leading city in power semiconductors."
