Busan Port Authority Discusses AI and Digital Twin Innovation with Global Port Experts

Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sangkeun) participated in the 7th ChainPORT Academy held in Singapore from March 24 to 26.

BPA engaged in in-depth discussions with leading global port experts on the application of AI and digital twin technologies in ports, and sought ways to collaborate in overcoming the challenges faced.

The ChainPORT Academy is a working group under the international port organization 'ChainPORT,' where major ports worldwide share knowledge and data for port digitalization. The CIOs (Chief Information Officers) of 10 ports, including Busan, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Singapore, Los Angeles, and Montreal, are key members.

The ports affiliated with ChainPORT include five European ports: Hamburg (Germany), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Antwerp (Belgium), Barcelona (Spain), and Gothenburg (Sweden); two Asian ports: Busan (Korea) and Singapore; two North and Central American ports: Los Angeles (USA) and Montreal (Canada); and one African port: Tanger Med (Morocco).

The 4th ChainPORT event (2022) was hosted by Busan Port Authority, the 5th event (2023) by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges Authority in Belgium, and the 6th event (2024) by the Port of Los Angeles Authority in the United States.

The 7th ChainPORT Academy focused on 'AI and Digital Twin Innovation in the Port Sector,' with intensive workshops on specific topics such as AI-based port maintenance and traffic management, logistics analysis and forecasting using AI, and building a digital port ecosystem with the application of digital twin technology.

At the event, BPA shared the latest progress of the 'Container Alignment Monitoring System' presented at last year's ChainPORT Academy, and introduced ways to further enhance the safety and efficiency of port operations by integrating weather information.

BPA also presented a roadmap for incorporating AI into its proprietary port community system (PCS), ChainPortal, and held in-depth discussions on overcoming the challenges faced by Busan Port Authority.

Going forward, BPA plans to further expand cooperation with global ports and actively pursue smart port technologies based on AI and digital twins with continued interest.
