Attendance at UN Security Council Meeting on Ukraine
"North Korea Sacrifices Its Own People in Exchange for Military, Political, and Economic Support"
Ambassador Hwang Jun-guk to the UN urged the cessation of illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea on the 26th (local time), stating that the war between Russia and Ukraine is causing severe suffering not only to both countries but also to North Korean soldiers and their families.
Ambassador Hwang made these remarks while attending an open meeting of the UN Security Council held at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA, saying, "North Korea must immediately stop sacrificing its own people in exchange for military, political, and economic support."
He stated, "According to interviews with captured North Korean soldiers, they were deceived into being deployed to the war under the pretext of training dispatch," adding, "Even families only learn of the deployment after receiving death certificates issued by the authorities, and the authorities even force them to sign confidentiality agreements."
Referring to the fact that on the 21st, Sergey Shoigu, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, who visited North Korea, met with Kim Jong-un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, and reaffirmed the intention to fully implement the 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty,' he said, "This implies that illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea will continue and directly contradicts the international community's efforts for the swift end of the war."
Ambassador Hwang positively evaluated the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, including those held this week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, stating, "I hope that the current diplomatic efforts will respect the principles and spirit of the UN Charter and lead to a just, inclusive, and sustainable peace."
Attending the meeting as the US representative, Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea mentioned the agreement between Russia and Ukraine to cease attacks on energy facilities and the agreement made the previous day to stop the use of force in the Black Sea, saying, "If this agreement is fully implemented, it will be an important first step on the path to peace," and urged, "Both sides to comply with and expand this agreement to reach a comprehensive ceasefire."
