All-out Efforts for Wildfire Containment and Damage Recovery
The People Power Party formed a special committee on the 26th to respond to the wildfire disaster that began in Uiseong, Gyeongbuk. The Democratic Party proposed a national disaster recovery consultation involving the ruling and opposition parties and the government to aid in damage restoration.
On the same day, Kwon Young-se, the Emergency Response Committee Chairman, urged in an urgent public message, "There can be no distinction between ruling and opposition parties in preparing measures for wildfire damage recovery and prevention," adding, "The government, local governments, and all political parties must unite their efforts."
To this end, the People Power Party emphasized that it will focus on restoring the wildfire-affected areas and supporting disaster victims. They explained that they will take the lead in necessary legislation, budget support, and policy formulation.
The party also urged its affiliated lawmakers and party committee chairpersons to take the lead in support efforts. Chairman Kwon said, "Please work closely with residents in your respective regions and take the lead in practical recovery activities and support."
The People Power Party completed the formation of the Wildfire Disaster Response Special Committee, chaired by Lee Man-hee, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee. The special committee consists of a total of 10 members, including Kim Seon-kyo, Cho Eun-hee, Jeong Hee-yong, Lee Seong-gwon, Seo Myeong-ok, Choi Eun-seok, and Lee Dal-hee. Seo Cheon-ho serves as the secretary.
Kim Dae-sik, the party’s chief floor spokesperson, introduced the committee, saying, "This special committee is an emergency body across the ruling coalition to swiftly respond to wildfire damage and oversee damage recovery and prevention measures," adding, "It is the first step in switching the entire party organization to an emergency operation mode."
Spokesperson Kim stated, "The special committee will focus on providing urgent support to affected areas, supporting firefighting and rescue authorities' activities, reviewing cooperation systems with local governments, and preparing legislative and institutional improvement measures related to wildfire prevention and response."
