"If Only This Existed"... Ssangam Park to Change Based on Citizen Proposals

Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Launches Full-Scale Redevelopment of Ssangam Park
Comprehensive Renovation of Walking Trails, Play Facilities, and Restrooms

"I wish something like this existed."

More than 400 citizen proposals are set to transform the park. Gwangsan-gu in Gwangju announced on the 26th that it will begin a redevelopment project to renovate Ssangam Neighborhood Park (Ssangam Park), which was established 31 years ago, into a lake park centered on citizens' daily lives. The district held a 'Ssangam Park Redevelopment Project Briefing' at the park site on the 25th, sharing the project's direction and progress with local residents.

Ssangam Park is a representative urban lake park in Gwangsan-gu, and a total of 1.25 billion KRW, including special grants, will be invested in this renovation. Gwangsan-gu emphasized a 'lifestyle-oriented redevelopment' that reflects citizen opinions, moving beyond simple facility repairs, and incorporated insights from the 413 suggestions received during the 8th term of local administration.

According to the renovation plan revealed that day, the project will include: ▲ replacement of the 800-meter lakeside walking trail and plaza pavement ▲ creation of picnic areas near the lake ▲ construction and improvement of old restrooms ▲ expansion of children's play facilities and installation of modern playground equipment ▲ and the establishment of a 'Fragrance Garden' to prevent unpleasant odors around the water purification facility. In particular, the 'Fragrance Garden' will focus on planting fragrant trees in areas where odor complaints have been frequent, aiming to create a pleasant environment and address both resident inconvenience and landscaping needs.

Park Byungkyu, head of the district office, said, "This redevelopment project is the first step in transforming Ssangam Park, the largest urban park in Gwangsan-gu, into a landmark park representing Gwangju," and added, "We will continue to listen to and reflect citizens' voices so that the park can become even more integrated into daily life."
