West Sea Coast Guard Mokpo Aviation Unit Marks 10 Years of Accident-Free Flights

Jurisdiction Includes Dokdo, Jejudo, and Baengnyeongdo

The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Headquarters (Chief Lee Myungjun) announced that a ceremony was held on the 25th at the Mokpo Aviation Unit (located in Samho-eup, Yeongam-gun) to commemorate the achievement of 10 years of accident-free flights.

Approximately 50 staff members, including the Chief of the West Sea Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, attended the ceremony, which included commemorative events and awards for distinguished service. The event served to reflect on the significance of accident-free flights and to emphasize the importance of flight safety.

The Mokpo Aviation Unit began operations in March 2015 and has since performed a variety of missions beyond its jurisdiction, covering areas such as Dokdo, Jejudo, and Baengnyeongdo. It has established itself as an all-weather large helicopter aviation unit, responding to accident scenes nationwide.

In particular, amid rampant illegal fishing activities within its jurisdiction, the unit has achieved results in preventing maritime accidents and reducing illegal fishing rates through unannounced aerial crackdowns on trawlers. Last September, the unit rescued crew members from a capsized vessel near Sibi-dongpado, Gunsan. Over the past 10 years, it has protected the lives of citizens without a single flight accident.

Lee Myungjun, Chief of the West Sea Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, stated, "The achievement of 10 years of accident-free flights by the Mokpo Aviation Unit is a valuable result created by the thorough safety awareness, continuous training, and dedicated efforts of all personnel. We will continue to do our best to protect the lives and safety of the public."
