Jung Soyoung Highlights Importance of Computing Resources for Reasoning
"New Products Every Year... Powerful GPUs Needed"
AMD Focuses on Infrastructure Strategy for Sovereign AI
NVIDIA and AMD, developers of artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors, jointly emphasized the importance of building AI computing infrastructure in South Korea as a matter of national strategic significance.
Jung So-young, CEO of NVIDIA Korea, attended the 'AI Global Conference' hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 25th and stated, "In the second half of this year, we will launch Blackwell Ultra; next year, Rubin; in 2027, Rubin Ultra; and in 2028, Feynman," adding, "NVIDIA's direction is to release new products every year."
Regarding the recent NVIDIA GTC event held in San Jose, USA, Jung said, "Some have said the 'wow factor' was weak, but GTC is less about announcing NVIDIA's technology and new products and more about expanding the ecosystem and sharing NVIDIA's vision and philosophy."
He explained, "The mechanism of IT business that has continued for 20 years is changing," and added, "When users input text, various forms of generative AI services are emerging that provide text, video, images, chemical formulas, and molecular structures."
He particularly noted that today's AI models are evolving beyond simply processing input data and producing answers to become 'reasoning AI models' with inference capabilities. Reasoning AI models think logically step-by-step like humans and possess high problem-solving skills and flexibility. Jung said, "Reasoning AI models enable services of quality incomparable to previous ones."
He continued, "Computing resources are not used only to create AI foundation models," and said, "A lot of computing power is also required for reasoning that solves problems needed in various fields such as medical, healthcare, manufacturing, and telecommunications based on well-developed foundation models."
He explained that the four major cloud companies?Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle?purchased 1.3 million units of the previous generation Hopper chips last year, and this year, they are buying 3.6 million Blackwell chips, which are gaining great popularity.
He highlighted that by connecting 72 Blackwell GPUs with NVLink technology, performance stability was enhanced, stating, "It was made to operate like one gigantic GPU," and added, "Powerful GPUs are needed to accelerate training."
Keith Strier, Senior Vice President of AMD, presented on the importance of AI computing infrastructure under the theme of Sovereign AI via real-time video.
He emphasized, "The pace of AI technology development is very fast and dynamic, rewriting the rules of competition between industries and nations," and stressed, "Strengthening domestic AI capabilities is important for national competitiveness."
He foresaw that Sovereign AI, which builds autonomous AI infrastructure, technology, workforce, and services, could become an opportunity for various stakeholders. He said, "Many participants are running the track in Sovereign AI, and many winners will emerge," adding, "It can improve public services or export AI capabilities by utilizing eco-friendly energy."
He further stated, "AI will change jobs and industries and create new opportunities for professional development," and suggested, "While considering the impact on public education, we should also examine how to transform opportunities for young people to realize their potential."
He noted that we are moving toward the 'Sovereign AI 2.0' era, which views AI infrastructure from a national strategic perspective, and said that building computing infrastructure should be part of national policy. He added, "Focus on supply chains and communities, and consider physical security and cyber stability."
