Jeollanam-do has selected "organic Bangpung" grown in Nam-myeon, Yeosu as the eco-friendly agricultural product of March.
Bangpung is known for its effectiveness in preventing stroke, boosting immunity, detoxification, anti-inflammatory effects, and improving blood circulation. It is consumed in various forms such as seasoned vegetables, pickles, and tea. The name originates from the meaning "to block the wind."
Nam-myeon in Yeosu is a leading Bangpung cultivation area in Korea. Out of the total Bangpung cultivation area in Yeosu (113ha), 3ha are dedicated to eco-friendly Bangpung (2.3ha organic and 0.7ha pesticide-free).
In particular, about 7 tons of organic Bangpung are produced annually from 2.3ha and are sold through outlets such as "Chorokmaeul" and "Dure Saenghyeop" at prices 2 to 3 times higher than regular Bangpung. The annual income amounts to about 40 million won.
Kim Youngseok, Director of the Eco-friendly Agriculture Division of Jeollanam-do, said, "We will strengthen the competitiveness of farms practicing eco-friendly agriculture so that eco-friendly agricultural products preferred by consumers can be supplied stably at the right time."
