Yeongyang County Holds 15th Tuberculosis Prevention Day Campaign

On the 24th, Yeongyang County in North Gyeongsang Province held a tuberculosis prevention campaign at 10 a.m. in the area around Yeongyang Traditional Market to mark the 15th Tuberculosis Prevention Day.

On this day, leaflets and promotional materials containing information on proper cough etiquette, tuberculosis prevention guidelines, and the symptoms and management of tuberculosis were distributed to residents visiting the traditional market. This was done to raise awareness about the importance of tuberculosis prevention and management, as well as to improve public perception and alertness regarding tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is a respiratory infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is released into the air through the coughing, sneezing, or talking of a tuberculosis patient and can infect the lungs of others. With consistent treatment for more than six months, tuberculosis can be completely cured, and the risk of transmission disappears after about two weeks. Therefore, early detection and treatment are crucial.

Residents who wish to be screened for tuberculosis can receive free chest X-rays and sputum tests at the Yeongyang County Public Health Center at any time. If diagnosed with tuberculosis, they will receive continuous management from the health center, including medication management and screening for family contacts.

County Governor Oh Dochang stated, "Elderly people are at higher risk of developing tuberculosis due to weakened immunity, and because clear symptoms of tuberculosis may not appear, regular tuberculosis screening is important. I encourage everyone to participate in tuberculosis screening once a year."
