140,000 Korean Language E-Books Available for Rent Overseas in the US, Japan, France, and More

Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Expands E-Book Access
to 26 Overseas Korean Education Centers

Overseas users in countries such as the United States and Japan can now access approximately 140,000 Korean e-books and audiobooks owned by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education without any limit on the number of simultaneous users.

On the 24th, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced that it will implement the "Overseas Korean Education Center E-book Support" program, the first of its kind among metropolitan and provincial offices of education.

Until now, as part of "support for overseas Korean language education," the Office has provided books for Korean language learners at Korean Education Centers abroad, but due to limited budgets relative to demand, it was difficult to continuously support printed books.

Accordingly, the Office decided to support subscription-based e-book services from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s electronic library to 26 overseas Korean Education Centers worldwide. Users can receive temporary service accounts without individually registering as members of the electronic library, and can use 140,000 Korean e-books and audiobooks without restrictions on the number of simultaneous users or the number of loans.

The Office stated, "This project is significant in that it expands the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s electronic library service, which has been operating since 2010, to overseas locations," adding, "We expect it to contribute to creating a Korean language education environment for overseas Koreans and students beyond borders, and to enhancing the status of the Korean language and Korean culture worldwide."
